Joyce Tischler

American attorney, Joyce Tischler has devoted her career to advancing the field of animal law. Affectionately known as the “Mother of Animal Law,” Joyce co-founded the first U.S. nonprofit dedicated to protecting animals using the legal system, the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF). That was in 1979, and since then, Joyce has played a pivotal role in launching and shaping this new field of the law. Joyce served as the ALDF’s executive director for 25 years and its general counsel until her retirement from ALDF in the spring of 2019.
Joyce is currently teaching Animals in Agriculture Law and Policy at Lewis & Clark Law School in Portland, Oregon. She co-authored (with the Center for Animal Law Studies’ Pamela Hart and Kathy Hessler) a first-of-its-kind casebook, Animal Law: New Perspectives on Teaching Traditional Law. She will continue teaching at Lewis & Clark as a distinguished visiting professor and is co-authoring a new casebook, another first-of-its-kind that will enable law schools to offer industrial animal agriculture law as a separate law course in the environmental, animal, food policy and public health tracks.
